Daniel Spierling - Looking 10 years back and into the future - Evolution of the DE-CIX Frankfurt network
2008 - An important year for the polish ISP and telecommunication community, due to the formation of the first PLNOG meeting. Further the same year did also mark a milestone for the DE-CIX IXP operations in Frankfurt, as a fundamental change from our former bus infrastructure to a double star design for additional reliance and scalability was deployed, in addition to introducing equipment of a new vendor into our network. Due to massive growth in traffic and new members, however roughly four years later, again we had to adjust and migrate to an entire new setup, which would then finally sustain us to grow until today, as well as next years to come. After 10 years we are now approaching the 20th PLNOG in Warsaw. We would like to take this event as an opportunity to look back how the DE-CIX infrastructure in Frankfurt evolved since the 1st PLNOG meeting. Also we are glad to present what is next, highlighting how we are planning to scale the infrastructure, as well as present new and upcoming features of our routeservers, which represent a crucial part of the entire IXP infrastructure as well. With the recent developments of memcached exploits, abused for DDoS reflection attacks, DDoS traffic volumes are driving to new heights and are challenging some network operators on handling these wast amount of traffic flows. We therefore would like to end this talk by shortly showcasing our ability to help ISPs mitigate these DDoS attacks, by using the DE-CIX blackholing service.
